How many questions are in the motorcycle theory test?

The test has 70 questions. Five are unscored trial questions, so the maximum score is 65 points. You need at least 52 points to pass, and the time limit is 50 minutes.

Is the theory test different for A1, A2 and A?

No. Trafikverket uses the same knowledge test for all three entitlements. What differs is the minimum age, the power limits and the test motorcycle used for the driving test – not the questions.

What is the difference between A1, A2 and A?

Accepted Answer

A1 (light motorcycle, from age 16) covers machines up to 125 cc, up to 11 kW and up to 0.1 kW/kg. A2 (medium, from 18) covers up to 35 kW and 0.2 kW/kg, and the motorcycle must not be restricted down from more than 70 kW. A (heavy, from 24 – or 20 if you have held A2 for at least two years) covers all two- and three-wheeled motorcycles.

Do I have to take motorcycle risk training?

Yes. Motorcycle risk training has two parts: part 1 on behaviour, alcohol, drugs and fatigue, and part 2 on speed, safety and riding in demanding conditions. Both must be completed before the driving test, and the training is valid until you obtain the licence, for a maximum of five years.

Do I have to retake the theory test when stepping up from A1 or A2 to A?

No. If you already hold A1 or A2, only a passed driving test for the higher entitlement is required — provided you meet the age requirement and have valid risk training from when the earlier entitlement was obtained.

How old must I be to practise for category A?

Accepted Answer

23, or 19 years and 6 months if you have held A2 for at least one year and six months. From 17 years and 6 months you may practise, but only at a driving school, and the instructor must ride along on the motorcycle or in a sidecar.

How long is a passed theory test valid?

Accepted Answer

A passed theory test is valid for one year. You must pass the driving test within that time, otherwise the theory test has to be retaken.

Can I practise in my own language?

Accepted Answer

The interface is available in twelve languages. Questions and answer options are in Swedish, exactly as in the real test, because Swedish terminology is what you need on exam day.

What two-wheelers may I ride on a category B licence?

Accepted Answer

A B licence covers a class I moped. It does not cover any two-wheeled motorcycle – light, medium or heavy – those require A1, A2 or A. One exception: anyone who obtained a B licence before 19 January 2013 retains the right to ride a three-wheeled motorcycle.

Can I skip A1 and go straight for A2?

Yes. The entitlements are not a compulsory ladder. You may apply for the entitlement whose minimum age you meet, provided the driving test is taken on a motorcycle that meets the requirements for that entitlement.

What is a learner's permit and why do I need one?

The learner's permit is Transportstyrelsen's decision that you may practise and take tests for a given entitlement. Without it, no practice riding may take place – neither privately nor at a driving school.

Do I have to attend a driving school to take the driving test?

Accepted Answer

No. Practice riding may be done privately with an approved supervisor. The motorcycle risk training, however, must be completed with an approved provider.

Must I ride with the lights on during the day?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A motorcycle must be ridden with the prescribed lighting on. It helps oncoming and crossing traffic spot you earlier, which is the most common accident type for motorcyclists.

Are open-face helmets allowed in Sweden?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the requirement is that the helmet is approved and fastened. A full-face helmet does however give considerably better protection for the face and jaw, and also against cold, insects and stone chips.

Must the passenger wear the same protective gear as the rider?

Accepted Answer

The helmet requirement applies to both rider and passenger. Other protective gear is not regulated in the same way, but a passenger slides just as far on the asphalt as a rider – full gear should be treated as a given.

How old may a helmet be?

Accepted Answer

Materials age even without use. Follow the manufacturer's recommended service life, and always replace the helmet after a heavy impact – even if the shell looks intact, the absorbing layer inside may be spent.

May I ride a motorcycle during the Swedish winter?

Accepted Answer

Yes, there is no ban on winter riding. But cold, salt, grit and the risk of patchy ice place completely different demands on tyres, gear and margin.

What happens if I fail the knowledge test?

Accepted Answer

You book a new test. Trafikverket applies a short waiting period between attempts, and you receive a result breakdown per topic – use it to redirect your studies rather than repeating the same questions.
