The 7 most common reasons people fail the taxi exam
The patterns are clear – avoid these mistakes and your chances improve sharply.
Unbalanced studying
1) Only legislation is studied. Part 2 feels hardest, so many people put nearly all their time there and forget that part 1 actually has more subject areas – eight of them – and demands broader knowledge rather than deeper. 2) Outdated facts are used. Old notes and group chats circulate with incorrect information, for example that the age requirement is 21 (it was lowered to 20 on 1 January 2025) or that there are still three test parts (it became two back in November 2022).
The wrong test strategy
3) One part at a time, with a long gap in between. Since both parts must be passed within six months of the first, anyone who waits too long with the second risks having to retake the first. 4) The test is booked too early, before the knowledge has settled. Book only once you consistently clear practice tests with a margin, because a rebooking or a failed test costs the full fee again. 5) No practice under time pressure. Fifty minutes for 65 and 46 questions sounds like plenty, but someone who has never practised against the clock is easily thrown by the unfamiliar pressure of the test room.
Underestimated Swedish and practical slips
6) The Swedish in the question texts is underestimated. The test is only given in Swedish, and part of the difficulty lies in understanding exactly what the question is asking – not in the factual knowledge itself. 7) The authorities are mixed up, for example who issues the licence (Transportstyrelsen) and who arranges and administers the test (Trafikverket). It rarely decides a pass on its own, but it signals shallow learning and usually travels together with other knowledge gaps.
How to avoid failing
Practise all eight subject areas in part 1, not just the legislation in part 2. Take at least one timed practice test that mirrors the real 50 minutes before you book.
