How taxi driver pay works
Taxi drivers are usually paid in one of three ways: a fixed monthly salary, a guaranteed base pay with commission, or pure commission on what you bring in. Which model applies depends on the employer and on whether the company follows the collective agreement between the Transport Workers' Union and the employer side. Always ask how the pay model works before you sign, because the difference between a guaranteed base and pure commission can be large.
What affects your income
Income is driven above all by how much and when you drive. Unsocial hours on evenings, nights and weekends carry supplements, and big cities with more trips normally earn more than smaller towns. The customer base, the season and how efficiently you plan your shifts also matter – which is why two drivers on the same terms can earn different amounts.
Career paths in the profession
Many start as an employed driver and then specialise, for example in special transport, medical transport, school transport or airport taxi. The next step for those who want their own business is to apply for a taxi traffic permit and become an operator with their own car or own employees. Work experience, local knowledge and a good reputation with booking centres are what open these doors.
Demand and the future
The need for taxi drivers is stable, partly because publicly funded trips such as special and medical transport always need drivers regardless of the economy. Digitalisation with app-based bookings has changed how trips are dispatched, but the driving profession itself and the requirement for a taxi driver licence remain. The licence is therefore an investment with long durability.
